Any item from the "We do accept" column that we don't think will sell.

But hang on a minute!  There's more.  It's not enough that your item falls within one of our "What We Accept" categories.  It also needs to be an item we believe will sell.

We believe an item will sell if it is:

  •         in gently used, “display ready” condition;
  •         a desirable style in today’s market; and
  •         properly priced.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN
BY "DISPLAY READY" CONDITION?

An item is in display-ready condition if it is:

  •       structurally sound – sturdy with no loose or missing  parts;
  •       its wood or other finish is in good condition, no peeling veneer;
  •       all handles and pulls are present;
  •       moving parts, if any, are fully functional;
  •       “live” batteries are included with all battery operated items (e.g. clocks, etc.); and
  •         framed art is ready to hang (e.g. has saw tooth hanger, wire hanger or other implement already attached to the back; and
  •         item is CLEAN and odor free (from a non-smoking environment), no stains or tears in upholstery.  Please dust or polish furniture, remove all items from drawers, and clean spider webs and other debris from under furniture.  Clean all glass, polish silver and remove melted candle wax  and burned candles from candleholders.

WHAT'S DESIRABLE IN TODAY'S MARKET?

This is one of those “we know it when we see it” sorts of things.  And the fact is that it's a moving target. Trends come and go.  Styles run hot and cold.  We have to reserve our floor space for those things that will appeal to the largest part of our market.  If you aren’t certain whether your item qualifies as “desirable in today’s market”, please ask.

For example, while we do take sofas, we do NOT take early American style sofas with orange herculon upholstery.  While we take lamps, we do NOT take shiny brass lamps with crushed, dated shades.

Remember the armoire-style entertainment center? Before every household had a flat panel tv, the armoire-style entertainment center was everywhere!  Manufacturers still make them, and folks still buy them, but not like they once did.  Because of that, they don't bring the price they once did.  Most folks are buying them for bedrooms or to "repurpose" for use as clothing or office storage or other uses and using the low, sleek "media centers" to support their LCD tvs.  So, we're happy to accept these pieces, but since they're not in demand like they once were, our price will be lowered to attract buyers.

You may even be surprised when we won't take something on consignment that you previously purchased in our shop...because whatever it is just isn't selling well at the current time or we may be overstocked on that particular type of item.

 By the way, did we forget to mention our love affair with KITSCH?  Good kitsch stands the test of time and just NEVER goes out of style.  We love the unusual, and so do our customers.  Let us take a look at your Kitsch to see if we can sell it for you.

WHEN IS AN ITEM PROPERLY PRICED?

An item is properly priced when it is priced to sell.

Regardless of how a desirable an item is, our customers are sticklers for a good deal.  It must be priced to sell, or it will just sit in the shop taking up valuable floor space.

An item is priced to sell in OUR shop if it is priced considerably lower than a comparable item sold elsewhere.  We hear it all the time from our customers..."wow, your prices are really good!"  That's what draws our customers to a deserted shopping center to shop at House to House...great prices on great merchandise!!

DO YOU EVER ACCEPT ITEMS THAT AREN'T IN
NEAR PERFECT CONDITION?

Well...yes.  We often have customers who set out to find a piece to paint, reupholster, or otherwise transform from its “found” condition. We love to be able to provide those creative folks with the proverbial “sow’s ear” that they can turn into a silk purse.  And we love to see what they do with it!

So, if your item doesn’t meet the 7 point “gently used” test, don’t despair.  We may be able to take it and include it as a part of our SOW'S EAR COLLECTION.  We'll just have to see it to know whether we can make an exception.  But mind you…these items will be priced according to their condition.
