TIDBITS & TIPS

(Okay...so these tidbits & tips don't come from Martha Stewart,
but that doesn't make them any less helpful!)

Every once in a while we come across information we know will be of interest to our customers because they ask us these questions all the time! As we find answers to these and other questions, we'll include them here.

Do you have a valuable piece of information that might be of interest to our customers?  Tell us so we can pass it along!

FURNITURE REPAIR/RESTORATION SUPPLIES:

If you need a piece of hardware or other item to help restore a piece of furniture - especially vintage or antique furniture - visit www.vandykes.com.  This furniture restorer's catalog carries reproductions of old hardware, furniture legs/feet, mantels, etc. you can use for your Sow's Ear Collection purchases, or for another piece you might have at home.

MATTRESS/BED SIZES:   Folks always ask us about mattress sizes.  Here are the answers...

twin standard:          39" wide, 75" long
twin x-long:              39" wide x 80" long
full/double:              54" wide, 75" long
queen:                     60" wide, 80 inches long
king:                        76" wide, 80" long
California king:        72" wide, 84" long

UPHOLSTERY YARDAGE ESTIMATES:  Need to get a ballpark estimate on how much fabric will be required to cover a chair or sofa - something from our Sow's Ear Collection perhaps?

Lots of folks ask us if we know how much fabric it will take to cover a piece of furniture they find in our shop. When that question comes up, we check a ratty old Upholstery Yardage Estimate chart someone left at the shop years ago. We found something similar online, and here it is.  Remember, these are just estimates.  Be sure to check with your upholsterer before you make any final decisions regarding fabric amount and type for your particular piece(s).

WHERE TO BUY UPHOLSTERY FABRIC:  We recommend folks bite the bullet and head west for the best selections and deals in upholstery fabric.  While there are great places all around Atlanta, you can avoid nasty in-town traffic if you head for:

Snellville Fabric Mart,
2340 Ronald Reagan Parkway
Snellville, GA  30078
678-344-9004

OR

OHCO Fabrics
4158 Robinson Street
Covington, GA
770-786-4887

If you don't mind a short drive on I-85 to the Jimmy Carter Blvd. exit, then try:

Frugal Fabrics
6734 Jimmy Carter Blvd
Norcross, GA
770-409-0408

INSTABIND - premade edging/binding for RUGS & CARPETS

I came across this product while trying to figure out what it would cost to cut a rug down and bind the edges.  I haven't tried the product yet, but sure intend to.  It's essentially a ready-made rug edging you attach to a rug or carpet to give it a finished/bound-look. I have a gazillion unfinished projects that have to be done before I get around to trying Instabind, but once I do I'll let you know how it works.  Give it a try and let us know what you think!

Here's a link to their website - instabind.com.  You can watch an instructional video that's very helpful.  It looks like a pretty simple process to me!

FURNITURE ARRANGMENT:  A common concern of our customers is whether a piece of furniture will fit properly into the "destination room."  The piece may fit according to it's measurements, but will it work well in the room?

A friend was recently designing a house she plans to build, and she asked my help in trying to ensure that the room sizes would be sufficient for her to use her existing furniture.  I found this article by Abe Abbas on Ask.com., and thought it would be a helpful piece of information to pass along. Check it out.
